The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been named the only Kenyan university to make it to the top 2,000 universities globally in the 2023 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
UoN was placed 1,425th on the list and ranked as the leading higher learning institution in Kenya.
The CWUR rankings are based on four indicators: quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, and research performance.

University of Nairobi’s score in each of these areas was as follows:
- Quality of education: 25% (1,610th)
- Alumni employment: 25% (1,610th)
- Quality of faculty: 10% (1,180th)
- Research performance: 40% (1,180th)
University of Nairobi’s overall score of 3.33 out of 5 placed it in the 75th percentile of universities worldwide.
The other African countries making the list were South Africa with 12 universities, Egypt with 20 universities, Uganda with 2 universities, Morocco with 3 universities, Tunisia with 1 university, and Nigeria with 4 universities.
The top-ranked university in Africa was the University of Cape Town in South Africa, which came in at 267th place globally.
The top-ranked university in the Middle East was Cairo University in Egypt, which came in at 520th place globally.
The top-ranked university in the world was Harvard University in the United States, which came in at 1st place globally. The top-ranked university in the United Kingdom was the University of Oxford, which came in at 2nd place globally.
