Onchiri’s crucial goals secured the victory, propelling Shabana FC to a total of 73 points, four points clear of second-placed Murang’a Seal FC.
The success of Shabana FC is a testament to the unwavering support of their dedicated fan base, who played a pivotal role in helping the team navigate through the challenges of the 2022/23 season.
However, it is crucial to reflect on the journey that brought them to this momentous achievement.
Back in November 2018, Shabana FC faced a bleak future as they lacked the necessary funds to compete in the NSL.
Recognizing the club’s plight, then-Deputy President William Ruto spearheaded a fundraising campaign that raised over Ksh 7 million.
Deputy President Ruto himself donated Ksh 2 million, with an additional contribution of Ksh 1 million from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Jared Nivaton, the Shabana FC chairman at the time, made a significant contribution of Ksh 500,000, while the late lawyer Nyandoro Kambi generously donated Ksh 100,000.
Other notable contributors included Kipchumba Murkomen (Ksh 200,000), Ken Lusaka (Ksh 200,000), Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa (Ksh 100,000), former FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya (Ksh 100,000), and former AFC Leopards chairman Allan Kasavuli (Ksh 100,000).
During the fundraising event, Deputy President Ruto addressed the concerns raised regarding the source of his contributions.
He urged his critics to focus on their own efforts and cease questioning the origin of his financial support.
Ruto emphasized his hard work in acquiring the funds, contrasting it with the perceived inactivity of his opponents who allegedly squander their resources on alcohol consumption.
Demonstrating solidarity with Shabana FC, various leaders contributed generously to the cause.
President Uhuru Kenyatta extended a contribution of Ksh 1 million, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka donated Ksh 200,000, Kisii County Governor James Ongwae provided Ksh 200,000, and Governor Sonko contributed Ksh 200,000. Other notable contributors included ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi (Ksh 80,000), Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi (Ksh 100,000), Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, flamboyant businessman Don Bosco (Ksh 50,000), MP Simba Arati (Ksh 100,000), Senator Millicent Omanga, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, Anthony Kibagendi (Ksh 20,000), Kisii County Senator Sam Ongeri (Ksh 100,000), MP Janet Ongera (Ksh 50,000), and MP Machogu (Ksh 50,000), among others. The collective contributions amounted to over Ksh 7 million.
The overwhelming support and generosity from leaders and fans alike have propelled Shabana FC back into the limelight, enabling them to reclaim their rightful place in the FKF-Premier League. The club’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiring tale of resilience, determination, and the power of unity.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, played a significant role in supporting Shabana FC by acquiring their current team bus. Driven by his passion for sports development, Matiang’i recognized the importance of providing the team with adequate resources to enhance their performance and overall experience.
The acquisition of the team bus marked a milestone for Shabana FC, as it not only improved their logistics but also symbolized a sense of unity and professionalism within the club.
