A day after a fire destroyed stalls in the Gikomba Market, the Governor of Nairobi offered support of Ksh2.4 million to the market’s traders.
The governor, along by Starehe Member of Parliament Amos Mwago and other officials, personally presented the donations while touring the affected area.
Iron sheets were among the donated goods, which, according to Sakaja, would assist impacted vendors reopen their stalls.
The administration of Sakaja, he said, is moving quickly to build a fire station in the market, so that emergency responders can get to a fire quickly.
Sakaja announced his plan to get the Gikomba Market public title deed processed as part of his mitigation steps.
He said that if Gikomba were officially recognized as a public market, “opportunistic arsonists,” who he said were responsible for the market’s recurrent fires, would be discouraged from setting them.
With Gikomba traders earlier today when I delivered support worth 2.4m as well as 200k to the family of Alfred Mugo Wahome who unfortunately succumbed after an inferno at Gikomba.
