Kisumu, Kenya, Jan 15- President William Ruto apologizes to Dr.Miguna Miguna over his brutal deportation to Canada in 2018.
After years of legal battles and exile, Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna finally received an apology from President William Ruto for his brutal deportation to Canada in 2018.
In a statement on Saturday, Miguna revealed that President Ruto had personally apologized to him on behalf of the government for the treatment he had received under the previous regime.
Former IEBC commissioner, Roselyn Akombe, also commented on the apology saying it was long overdue and that no Kenyan should ever have to go through what Miguna did.
Miguna’s troubles began in March 2018 when the Jubilee government imposed red alerts on him, making his travel impossible. He was forced into exile and blocked from re-entry, all because of his role in the unofficial swearing-in of ODM leader Raila Odinga as the People’s President.
Miguna claimed that on March 28, 2018, he was sedated, dragged, assaulted, and forcefully flown to Canada. He also stated that his passport was confiscated and destroyed the second time he was deported.
It wasn’t until October 2022 that he was able to fly back to Kenya after the Kenya Kwanza administration, under a directive from Ruto, facilitated his return. Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua also called for the President to apologize for the deportation in 2022.
Miguna, who holds both Kenyan and Canadian citizenship, was determined to return to his home country and fight for justice. He tweeted on October 12, 2022, “The Rule of law, fearlessness, persistence, and focus have prevailed.” Despite the apology, it is clear that Miguna’s journey was a long and difficult one, but one in which he ultimately emerged victorious.
