Nairobi,Kenya, May 14- President William Ruto to recruit 35,000 teachers in the next financial year to curb teachers’ shortage in JSS
President William Ruto has announced that the government will recruit 35,000 teachers in the next financial year to curb the shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools (JSS).
The President made the announcement of the recruitment of teachers on Sunday during a media engagement at State House, Nairobi.
He said the recruitment of the new teachers is part of the government’s efforts to ensure that all learners in JSS have access to quality education.
“We have a shortage of teachers in JSS. We are going to recruit 35,000 teachers in the next financial year to address this shortage,” President Ruto said.
The President said the government is also committed to improving the infrastructure in JSS. He said the government will build new classrooms and laboratories in all JSS.

“We are going to build new classrooms and laboratories in all JSS. We want to ensure that our learners have access to quality education,” President Ruto said.
The shortage of teachers in JSS has been a major challenge in the education sector.
The government has been unable to recruit enough teachers to meet the demand. This has led to some learners being taught by unqualified teachers.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) posted teachers who were recently recruited reported to schools on February 6, 2023.
In December 2022, TSC advertised for mass recruitment of teachers and invited them across the country to apply for the 35,550 vacancies in primary and secondary schools.
9,000 posts were on Permanent and Pensionable Terms of Service for Secondary School Teachers.
According to TSC, 1,000 posts were on Permanent and Pensionable terms of service for Primary School Teachers. 21,550 posts were for Teacher Interns in Junior Secondary Schools and 4,000 posts were for Teacher Interns in Primary Schools.
Though TSC had scheduled January 23, 2023 as the date for reporting the newly recruited teachers and teacher interns to schools, this was not possible as the recruitment process had not been finalized.
The 21,550 junior secondary school teachers recruited will be used for teaching the over 1.26 million Grade 7 learners.
TSC also received applications from primary school teachers with degrees and Diplomas in secondary options for deployment to junior secondary.
The Commission gave the link for the qualifying PTE teachers to submit their details online for the deployment process: https://tsconline.tsc.go.ke/tsc-teacher/login
However, according to TSC, only teachers serving under permanent and pensionable terms in public primary schools who meet requisite qualifications should apply.
The application exercise ended on February 6, 2023.
