The much-anticipated FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Posta Rangers, scheduled at Gusii Stadium, was abruptly called off after referees failed to show up.
The incident left fans, players, and club officials in shock, as this was the first FKF Premier League game at Gusii Stadium in 18 years.ย
The stadium was filled to capacity, with passionate fans eagerly awaiting the game.
Among the attendees were Governor Simba Arati and other regional leaders, further underscoring the significance of the match. However, despite both teams taking the field, the referees never appeared to officiate the match.
According to reports, the referees refused to officiate the game, citing security concerns. They claimed that the number of security officers provided was insufficient to ensure their safety.
Shabana FC management made efforts to persuade the officials to proceed, but the referees stood by their decision, leading Posta Rangers to leave the stadium.
In response to the controversy, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) released a statement acknowledging the situation and confirming that match officials had attended the pre-match team meeting but vanished before kickoff.ย
“The Football Kenya Federation acknowledges the current situation regarding the match officials assigned to officiate the FKF Premier League match between Shabana FC and Posta Rangers, scheduled for today at Gusii Stadium. As fans eagerly filled the stadium and both teams took to the field, it has come to our attention that the match officials, who were present during the pre-match team meeting, have unfortunately disappeared prior to kick-off,” read the FKF statement.
FKF promised a thorough investigation into the matter, assuring fans and stakeholders that the integrity of the match would be upheld.
“The FKF is actively investigating this matter and is committed to ensuring that the integrity of the match is upheld. We are currently working diligently to secure alternative match officials to officiate the game. However, if this is not possible, it may be necessary to reschedule the match,” FKF added.
The federation also thanked fans for their patience, noting the unfortunate nature of the situation.
Shabana FC also issued a statement praising their fans for their composure and discipline during the ordeal.
“As we reflect on today’s events, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our supporters for the level of maturity and discipline displayed. Your professionalism and composure have not only set a commendable example but have also defined our commitment to peace and integrity within the sport,” the club said.
Shabana further reaffirmed their dedication to the development of football, stating, “While we await official communication from the federation regarding the concerning situation involving the missing match officials, we want to reaffirm our dedication to supporting the growth and development of our beloved game.”
The FKF has promised to provide further updates as they investigate the disappearance of the match officials, leaving fans and players alike eagerly awaiting the next steps in this ongoing situation.
