Nyamira,Kenya, Jan 15-During the Nyamira County 2024 Scholarship Bursaries award ceremony, Governor Amos Nyaribo made a groundbreaking announcement, revealing plans for the creation of a fully operational university in Nyamira by May.
The governor attributed this development to President William Ruto, who had allocated the county the opportunity to host a university.
Governor Nyaribo, addressing the audience during the scholarship event, expressed the urgency to have classes commence in May.
He outlined that the construction of classes would not commence immediately but assured that three potential facilities, each with a minimum of 25 acres, had been identified.

The finalization of the selection process for the suitable location is expected to conclude by the end of the month.
Highlighting the collaborative efforts, Governor Nyaribo mentioned that Kisii University had generously offered to mentor the establishment of Nyamira University.
This mentorship would involve providing lectures to students even before the institution receives its full charter.
Governor Nyaribo declared, “We are thrilled to announce that President Ruto has allocated us a university. We want to kick off classes by May, so the construction of classrooms will start soon.”
“We have identified three potential locations with at least 25 acres each, and by the end of this month, we will finalize the decision on the site. Kisii University has graciously agreed to mentor the establishment by offering some lectures to our students before we obtain a full charter.”
Nyamira County, known for hosting some of the best schools in Kenya, including Nyambaria High School, Sironga Girls High School, Kebabe Girls, and Kebirigo High School, has long been without a public or private university.
Despite having notable institutions such as KMTC Nyamira campus, a few polytechnics, and a Teachers Training College (TTC), the absence of a university has been a gap in the region’s educational landscape.
Kisii University’s involvement in Nyamira’s higher education scene is not entirely new. The institution had previously established a satellite campus in Nyamira, but unfortunately, it was shut down a few years later based on recommendations from the Commission of University Education and the Advisory Committee of the Eminent Persons.
The governor’s announcement has been met with enthusiasm from the local community and education stakeholders.
The establishment of a university in Nyamira is seen as a significant milestone that will not only provide higher education opportunities for the youth but also contribute to the overall development of the county.
