
Kisii,Kenya,May 14- First Daughter Charlene Ruto Engages Kisii Youth in Innovation and Climate Change
Charlene Ruto, the First Daughter of Kenya, was hosted by the Kisii County Universities and Colleges Association to discuss innovation and climate change.
The event took people on May 12, 2023, and it was a thrilling experience for everyone involved.
The young people of Kisii showcased their various innovative ideas, which impressed Charlene and sparked discussions on how to collaborate and empower youth in the area.

Kisii County is renowned for having a talented youth cohort, especially in music and the arts. Charlene recognized the potential in these areas and pledged to collaborate with the youth in empowering them.
The event culminated in Charlene Ruto being given a new name, “Nyaboke,” which means honey in Kisii.

The gesture signifies the warm welcome and hospitality that Charlene Ruto received during her visit.
Naming of Children in Kisii Community
In Kisii, children are named based on various factors, such as the place of birth, occasion, death of family or prominent people, among others. Each name has a meaning that reflects the circumstances surrounding the child’s birth.
For instance, a person named Nyanchera means that their mother gave birth on the way. Nyanchera is derived from the Kisii word “Nya,” which means “way” or “path.”
Another example is the name Ong’ombe, which means that the child’s parents had many cattle. The name Ong’ombe is derived from the Kisii word “Eng’ombe,” which means “cow.” It shows that cattle rearing is an essential aspect of Kisii culture and heritage.
Gesare is another name given to a lady in Kisii. The name is derived from the Kisii word “Egesare,” which is a type of vegetable. Gesare means that the mother gave birth during the Egesare season or on an Egesare farm. It is a unique name that reflects the agricultural practices and importance of farming in Kisii.
In essence, each Kisii name has a meaning that reflects the circumstances surrounding the child’s birth or the parents’ desires for the child’s future. Naming is an essential aspect of Kisii culture, and it is considered an honour to be named after a family member or prominent person.
Youth Empowerment and Innovation
During the event, Charlene Ruto emphasized the need for youth empowerment, especially in innovation and technology.
She acknowledged the role that the youth play in shaping the future of Kenya and called on stakeholders to invest in their ideas and talents. Charlene recognized that Kisii County has an impressive talent pool that needs support and resources to realize their potential fully.
The youth showcased various innovative ideas during the event, including mobile apps that help farmers track their crop yields, renewable energy solutions, and smart transportation systems.
Charlene encouraged the youth to continue developing such ideas and pledged to offer support in various forms, such as mentorship, funding, and capacity building.
Climate Change and Sustainable Development
Another key issue discussed during the event was climate change and sustainable development.
Charlene Ruto emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and called on the youth to take an active role in promoting sustainable development.
She noted that climate change poses a significant threat to Kenya’s economy, health, and overall well-being.
The youth presented various solutions to mitigate climate change, including renewable energy solutions, waste management, and eco-friendly agriculture practices.

Zaheer Jhanda Mp Nyaribari Chache, ANC Deputy Party Leader and 2022 Kisii County Gubernatorial aspirant, Hon Charles Chweya Matoke, Nominated MCA Muranga County Assembly, Hon Sharleen Wambui ,EcoBana Ltd CEO Lennox Omondi Hsc, ICRSD CEO and 2022 Kisii County Women Rep aspirant, and Hon Vicky Nyaboke Onderi.
Also the Kisii University staff, Kisii County representative, Washington Levi Onjiri, Kisii County Youths Leader, Hon Lutik Marube, Kisii County Universities & Colleges Students’ Association (KCUCSA) Chairman, Hon Sagini Dennis, Kisii University Students Association (KSUSA) Chairman, Kimori Alex,and KSUSA Sec Gen Emiritus, Gen Charles Okoth were present.
