Nduru Level 4 Hospital in Nyamarambe Sub-County, Kisii, has been reopened a mere month after a mob attacked healthcare workers who were transferring unused medical equipment to other facilities facing shortages.
This attack had caused the hospital’s closure. The decision to reopen the hospital was made following a consultative meeting involving National and County Government officials, healthcare workers’ union representatives, and security agencies.

County Commissioner, Tom Anjere, commended the healthcare workers for agreeing to resume their duties and announced that the facility will receive 24-hour security coverage.
Additional security personnel will also be deployed in all Level 4 hospitals in the County to ensure that healthcare workers can operate without interruption.
Anjere also warned politicians against causing disharmony within the County and urged them to focus on providing constructive ideas for development.
Deputy Governor, Dr. Robert Monda, acknowledged the hardship faced by residents who rely on the hospital’s services and called on them to avoid participating in activities that may lead to their own suffering or harm public servants.
Monda also cautioned local politicians against taking matters into their own hands and urged them to use the appropriate channels to address their grievances.
Healthcare workers’ union representatives emphasized the importance of staff safety and warned that they would withdraw their services if their staff’s lives were at risk.
They also urged young people not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to cause chaos and restlessness and called on politicians to avoid interfering with health matters.
Nurses and clinical officers are set to resume their duties on May 15, 2023, while doctors had already returned to the Nduru Level 4 hospital on May 9, 2023, following a directive by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentist Union.
