Nakuru County Governor H. E. Susan Kihika on National Tree Planting Day 2023, spearheaded the National Tree Planting Day at Rhino Camp in Kabatini, Bahati Sub County this morning,in a bid to address water scarcity and promote environmental sustainability
Governor Kihika emphasized the critical need for improved water resource management within the county, attributing the challenges faced by some families in accessing water to poor water resource management.
The Governor revealed an ambitious goal to plant 298 million trees within the next decade to bolster environmental conservation efforts.
“Provision of clean water to Nakuru people is a significant agenda for me. We have allocated funds to pipe water directly into households, although we face opposition from certain cartels,” Governor Kihika remarked during the event.
Highlighting a collaborative effort, Governor Kihika announced a partnership with the Kenya Defence Forces to desilt dams, a move aimed at augmenting water availability for the county’s residents.
She urged the community in Kabatini to actively participate in tree planting initiatives to safeguard vital water catchment areas.
Governor Kihika underscored her commitment to prioritizing the completion of existing water projects initiated during her initial year in office before embarking on new endeavors. “Taxpayers’ money has been invested in these projects, and we are determined to see their completion before initiating new ones,” she stated.
The tree planting exercise, replicated across 11 sub-counties, saw the successful planting of 174,000 trees.
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Defense Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, Bahati MP Irene Njoki, Nakuru County Commissioner Layford Kibaara, and various County Executive Committee Members and Chief Officers.
The Governor’s focus on water resource management and environmental conservation aligns with the broader national agenda for sustainable development and climate resilience.
