MATIANG’I in UK-Matiang’i Lawyer Danstan Omari has issued a statement regarding recent media reports on his client, former Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government, Dr Fred Matiang’i.
According to Omari, there have been “unfair and unfortunate aspersions” made in various media reports on Matiang’i’s private travel and correspondence between constitutional offices.
Where is Matiang’i?
Omari has stated that Matiang’i travelled to the United Kingdom on Sunday 19th February 2023 via KLM Flight KL 566 on a regular private visit.
This is a trip that Matiang’i reportedly makes regularly, and in this case, he did so openly through public means. Omari has noted that there is nothing sinister about his client’s travel and that he is in the UK to attend to an urgent private family matter.
Matiang’i in UK?
Omari has also stated that his client is not aware of any investigations on him but acknowledges that constitutional offices have the right to discharge their mandate. He also emphasized that Matiang’i has the right to due process as a citizen of the country.
Given Matiang’i’s previous role in the security sector and his status, Omari noted that his client informally notified senior security sector and diplomatic officials about his two-week trip to the UK. As such, Omari has urged the media to exercise careful judgment while reporting on leaked communications that may have been intentionally released to achieve certain sinister objectives.
The lawyer also pointed out that the Constitution protects court proceedings from extraneous and prejudicial media reports on matters before them. He emphasized that such reports defeat the realization of justice. Omari believes that the aspersions created in the reports are stage-managed wars and driven by inexplicable vendetta and malice.
In conclusion, Omari called on the media to exercise responsible journalism in reporting on matters concerning his client. The statement was dated on the 1st day of March 2023
