Nestled off the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, approximately 3 kilometers from Nakuru town, 200 Metres from Ebony Resort, stands the magnificent Lord Egerton Castle, a historic treasure that doubles as a work of art.

Erected by the 4th Baron Egerton, Lord Egerton, this 53-roomed fortress takes visitors on a journey through time, transporting them to the prehistoric era while they bask in the breathtaking splendor of its architecture.

A true gem among Nakuru’s attractions, the castle draws thousands of visitors each month, allured by the opportunity to explore and uncover the unique history and charm that it holds. Surrounded by sprawling gardens and lawns on the vast, hundred-acre Ngata farm, the castle is a true embodiment of architectural marvel.

The construction of Lord Egerton Castle commenced in 1938, using imported materials. However, it wasn’t until 1954, a decade later, that the castle finally stood complete.

The building process was significantly delayed due to the disruptive influence of World War II on material transportation and labor availability.

The architectural design of the castle reflects a rare, archaic style that harks back to the previous century, imbuing the structure with an undeniable sense of timelessness.

Boasting 53 rooms, each with its unique purpose, the castle exudes an air of grandeur. Visitors can explore a classic room featuring a broken piano, a master bedroom, children’s rooms, a darkroom for photo development, a wine cellar, study rooms, and many more.

The oak stairway and flooring, along with the zinc tile roof, further enhance the castle’s opulent ambiance.

Upon its completion in 1954, Lord Egerton moved into the castle, where he resided until his passing in 1958. Since then, the castle has remained unoccupied, leading to its nickname, “castle without a prince.”

The captivating story behind the castle’s creation is linked to Lord Egerton’s desire to impress his fiancée, who had rejected his marriage proposals due to his modest dwellings.

Lord Egerton purchased land in Nakuru during the colonial era, building two successive houses in an attempt to please his beloved. Despite his efforts, his fiancée disparaged the houses as inadequate.

Fueled by determination, Lord Egerton embarked on constructing a castle that he believed would capture her heart. However, even this magnificent structure failed to sway her affections; she dismissed it as a mere museum.

This heartbreak marked a turning point for Lord Egerton. His subsequent lifelong aversion to women resulted in never marrying and actively forbidding women from entering his castle. Warning signs around the castle proclaimed that any woman approaching would be shot, a testament to his deep-seated bitterness.

His tale has given rise to the castle’s colloquial moniker, “The place where the suitor missed the target.”

The castle’s captivating narrative, coupled with its unparalleled architectural beauty, draws visitors from across the globe.

Since opening its doors to the public in 2005, the Lord Egerton Castle has become a sought-after destination for various events, from weddings and luxurious gatherings to corporate functions and cocktail parties.

The meticulously maintained lawns and flower gardens complement the castle’s opulent designs, evoking a sense of the past century that continues to captivate modern audiences.
