
Nairobi, Kenya (May 15, 2023) — Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have submitted a joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The three East African countries are hoping to bring the continent’s biggest football tournament to the region for the first time since 2013.
The bid, which was announced by Kenyan President William Ruto on Monday, is being supported by the East African Community (EAC).

The EAC is a regional bloc that includes Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
“We are excited to submit our bid to host the 2027 AFCON,” said President Ruto. “We believe that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have the infrastructure, the experience, and the passion to host a successful tournament.”
The three countries have a combined population of over 150 million people, making them the most populous region in Africa.
They also have a strong track record of hosting major sporting events. Kenya hosted the 2007 All-Africa Games, while Uganda hosted the 2016 Africa Nations Championship.
The 2027 AFCON will be the 36th edition of the tournament. It is expected to attract over 20 teams and millions of fans from around the world.
The other countries that have expressed interest in hosting the 2027 AFCON are Botswana, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Namibia, and Senegal. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce the host country in 2023.

- 2010: Angola
- 2012: Gabon and Equatorial Guinea
- 2013: South Africa
- 2015: Equatorial Guinea
- 2017: Gabon
- 2019: Egypt
- 2021: Cameroon
The 2023 AFCON will be hosted by Ivory Coast, while the 2025 AFCON will be hosted by Guinea.
