Nyamira County, Kenya — A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate at Sironga Girls High School in Nyamira County reportedly collapsed on Tuesday after allegedly being assaulted by a Ministry of Education official.
The incident, which unfolded during the ongoing national exams, has sparked concerns over the conduct of exam invigilators.
According to a police report, the incident took place at around 9 a.m. while the student was taking her exam.
The alleged assailant, identified as Beatrice Kendi, a quality assurance officer from the Ministry of Education, reportedly entered the examination room and confronted the student.
Kendi suspected the candidate of chewing something she believed to be unauthorized material, possibly linked to exam malpractice.
In an attempt to confirm her suspicions, Kendi allegedly slapped the student multiple times.
However, according to the police report, no prohibited items were recovered from the student.
“Despite the physical confrontation, there was no evidence of any unauthorized material on the student,” officers from the Nyamira Police Station noted.
Witnesses say that after the official left the room, the student appeared visibly distressed.
Roughly an hour later, as the examination period was drawing to a close around 10 a.m., the candidate reportedly collapsed.
Immediate medical attention was provided at the school’s dispensary, where the student was treated and later discharged in what was described as a “fair condition.”
Authorities have confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation into the matter.
