Types of Prisons in Kenya.
Maximum security prisons:
These facilities hold inmates who have been convicted of serious crimes, such as murder, and are considered to be a high escape risk.
They are of course the worst prisons in Kenya (based on the living conditions and available facilities). It’s a terrible place to be and you don’t want to land there.
Medium security prisons
After the maximum security prisons, we have medium security prisons.
These facilities hold inmates who have been convicted of less serious crimes and are considered to be a lower escape risk.
Low or Open custody prisons
These facilities have a more relaxed regime and allow inmates to work outside the prison, with the aim of helping them reintegrate into society.
These are meant for prisoners who are not a huge threat to the public.
Their key feature is that prisoners are allowed freedom of movement but within the prison boundaries.
Juvenile Remand centers
These are Facilities under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Directorate of Children Services.
They house offenders who are minors (below 18 years) temporarily once they have been charged in court.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Take on LGBTQ
In an interview with Christiane Amanpour of CNN, President Kenyatta reiterated the country’s stance on homosexuality saying that it goes against cultural beliefs of majority of Kenyans.
The President said same-sex relations is not an issue of human rights, but rather of “our own base as a culture”.
“I won’t engage in a subject that is of no importance to the people of Kenya. This is not an issue of human rights, this is an issue of our own base as a culture, as a people regardless of which community you come from,” President Kenyatta said.
Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya.
Ms Amanpour pressed the President about his personal opinion on the issue.
“This is not about Uhuru Kenyatta saying yes or no, this is an issue of the people of Kenya themselves who have bestowed upon themselves a Constitution after several years of clearly stating that this is not acceptable and is not a subject they are willing to engage in at this time and moment,” he said.
“This is a global issue. You don’t think the idea of their privacy, equality and rights is important?,” Ms Amanpour asked the President.
Mr Kenyatta replied: “It is important to them where they are. It’s not important to me as the leader of 49 million Kenyans. I represent that which our people desire us to believe.
“In years to come, after I am done being President, maybe our society will reach a state where that is an issues that people are willing to openly discuss.”
A report by Daily Nation, states that during a visit to Kenya in 2015, Barack Obama, the then US president, directly challenged Mr Kenyatta, on the need for equality for the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community, suggesting that “bad things happen” when countries do not accept their citizens’ right to be homosexual.
Mr Kenyatta bluntly shut down Mr Obama’s discussion on gay rights terming it “a non-issue” and that Kenya is not keen on embracing homosexuality.
Perhaps, it’s about time Kenya relooks into the welfare and rights of the LGBTQ community?
According to Langas OCPD John Odhiambo, Jackton executed the murder with the help of his two friends who are still at large.
The suspect says that he murdered Chiloba as revenge for betraying him in their relationship.
Odhiambo who had been staying with the deceased for a period of one year in Eldoret was arrested on Friday as the main suspect in the murder.
The two used to live together as husband and wife

Earlier, Slain model and LGBTQ crusader Edwin Chiloba’s best friend and alleged lover Iam.Lizer whose real name is Jackton Odhiambo was identified as the main suspect in the gruesome murder.
One of the neighbours alleges he heard a fight in the house where Chiloba and Jackton lived on the last night the LGBTQ model was seen. There was a scream and silence, alleges the neighbour
The caretaker of Chiloba’s residential place said Jackton had been spotted with the metallic box in which the model’s body was stuffed after the murder.
The caretaker says when he went to inspect the house that the two lived in preparation for a new tenant as Jackton moved out things, there was a strong foul smell that the latter dismissed as a big rat that had disturbed them for long which had died under the sofa.
He also said to have sent some money to a caretaker using Edwin’s phone on Jan 4
