After appearing in a video that went viral in which he was seen addressing Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sparked a stir.
On Monday, December 19, Gachagua was giving a speech in Nyeri for the opening of the Nyeri Open Market’s free Wi-Fi.
Gachagua said in the video that he would meet with the governor to discuss his stance on excluding matatus from the CBD and reportedly discouraging businesspeople from Mt. Kenya.
Gachagua also urged Sakaja to follow Susan Kihika, his Nakuru county equivalent, in advancing the cause of her region.
After meeting with Saccos and other transportation stakeholders, the county administration announced new instructions, as Sakaja had reported on November 28.
He petitioned the court to overturn the previous governor Mike Sonko’s ban on matatu CBD during his time as a senator representing Nairobi, claiming a dearth of alternatives and public involvement.
The prohibition on public service vehicles was imposed to prevent them from entering the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
