Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged targeted surveillance and intimidation by state agents, evoking memories of oppressive tactics from Kenya’s past.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, Gachagua detailed a disturbing series of events involving unmarked vehicles and state agents trailing his movements and monitoring his residence.
Gachagua stated, “Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go. They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and they trail me whenever I leave the house, even all the way to my rural home in Nyeri.”

The former Deputy President Gachagua shared a specific incident from last Sunday, claiming that a saloon car parked outside his Nairobi residence followed him to PCEA Kerarapon Church, continued trailing him to a restaurant where he had lunch, and finally back to his house.

Upon investigating the vehicle’s registration details via the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) portal, Gachagua discovered that the car’s license plates were registered to a lorry, raising further suspicions about its intentions.
Gachagua drew historical parallels to Kenya’s dark days under the Moi regime, during which the infamous ‘Special Branch’ engaged in widespread surveillance, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.
“This surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the era of the dreaded ‘Special Branch’ during the 24 years of Moi’s misrule!” Gachagua lamented.
The former Deputy President also expressed concerns for his safety, accusing state agents of harassment and issuing a plea to the public.
“In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions, and disappearances by state agents, I have thought it important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am going through, and inform them to hold the state responsible if I am harmed by state agents.”
Gachagua also appealed to the government, urging it to respect his status as a private citizen: “I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen.”
