Egerton University’s 9th edition of the annual Run For Mau event stood out with remarkable success, featuring distinguished guests and enthusiastic participation. Dr. Hukka Wario, the Council Chair, led the university in marking this significant occasion.
“The Run for Mau cross country has been instrumental in promoting climate change awareness and conservation efforts. We’re proud of the university’s role in reaching the national tree cover target, using sports as a catalyst for collaboration,” stated Dr. Wario.
Taking place at the Egerton University sports ground in Njoro, Nakuru County, the event welcomed notable figures, including Governor Susan Kihika, represented by Deputy Governor David Kones.
“We are pleased to collaborate on climate change and the conservation of our rivers, such as the River Njoro, which feeds into the Lake Nakuru National Park,” remarked Dr. Kones, accompanied by Nakuru CECM for environment and Water Dr Nalson Mara and CECM for Sports, Culture.
Egerton University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Isaac Kibwage, emphasized the institution’s steadfast commitment to initiatives like Run For Mau, which promote environmental conservation and community engagement. Prof. Benard Aduda, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Research and Extension, echoed this sentiment, urging athletes to maintain discipline in physical fitness beyond the race.
Run For Mau exemplifies Egerton University’s dedication to environmental preservation and community involvement, drawing participants from diverse backgrounds to advocate for the protection of the Mau Forest Complex, a critical ecosystem in Kenya.
This year’s edition highlighted the collaborative efforts of environmental and sports stakeholders, emphasizing the collective responsibility of safeguarding natural heritage for future generations.
The event featured various race categories overseen by Athletics Kenya officials, attracting athletes of all levels, from juniors to professionals. Faculty representatives, including Dr. Flora Fedha from FEDCOS and Prof. Micah Chepchieng’ from the Board of Undergraduate Studies, supported the event by addressing concerns and ensuring a successful outcome.
Kenya Commercial Bank, the main sponsor, expressed satisfaction with the event’s growth and its contribution to sporting excellence and community well-being. The bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives like Run For Mau, investing in the long-term benefit of the community.
