Nairobi, August 16, 2024 โ The Ministry of Education has officially announced the release of new admission letters for students in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort.
This comes after a directive from President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, who on August 14, 2024, instructed universities to publish new fee structures for first-year students.
Education CS Julius Ogamba says the revised fee structures include details on annual household contributions towards the total cost of degree programs.
In response to the Presidentโs directive, the Ministry has begun distributing the new letters to the first batch of 125,893 students.
These students, who have applied for loans and scholarships under the new Student-Centered Model, will receive their letters by Monday, August 19, 2024.
The Ministry has assured that universities are working to ensure all letters are delivered to students within the stipulated timeframe.
The Student-Centered Model, a key component of the government’s education reform strategy, allocates scholarships and loans based on the students’ level of need.
This model is designed to ensure that financial aid is distributed fairly and equitably, following one of the five predetermined bands of need assessment.
The Kenyan Government has reinforced its commitment to providing quality and affordable higher education by allocating KSh. 25.3 billion for scholarships and loans to students in the 2024/25 academic year.
These funds will be disbursed to students who have already applied for financial aid, with further disbursements expected as more applications are processed.
In a statement, the Ministry emphasized the importance of fair and equitable distribution of student funding.
The allocation process takes into account various factors, including a student’s family economic background, affirmative action policies, socio-demographic factors, and family education expenditures.
This approach ensures that the genuine needs of applicants are met, with priority given to those who require financial assistance the most.
Students with concerns about their fees are encouraged to direct their questions and appeals to the Ministry’s dedicated team through the Higher Education Portal (www.hef.co.ke).
This platform will serve as the main point of contact for students seeking clarification on the fee structure or requiring assistance with their applications.
The Ministry has also announced that the application portal will remain open, in line with the government’s commitment to ensuring that no student is left behind.
Additional applications will be processed on a rolling basis, and eligible students who have not yet applied for funding are urged to do so promptly to facilitate the swift processing of their applications.
Julius Migosi Ogamba, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, signed off on the statement, reiterating the government’s dedication to supporting the educational aspirations of all Kenyan students.
This move is seen as a significant step towards enhancing access to higher education in Kenya, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder students from pursuing their academic goals.ย
