Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Aisha Jumwa has today committed to work with relevant public and private sector players to strengthen and harness the full potential of the National Youth Service.
In her remarks during her maiden visit to NYS Headquarters in Ruaraka today, CS Aisha Jumwa said that she will strengthen and initiate progressive policies, legal and institutional reforms as well as programmes and projects that will guarantee greater efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability in the management of the Service, securing it firmly in the transformative leadership trajectory.
“I envision a transformed National Youth Service. A Service that will be an enabler and driver of the Kenya Kwanza Government Manifesto, the Kenya Vision 2030 and other development agendas by harnessing the energy of our youth for the prosperity of our nation,” said Hon. Jumwa.
The Cabinet Secretary also committed to support the Service in attaining the annual target intake of 20,000 youth and upscale national service functions with particular emphasis on climate smart agriculture and value addition for increased food production which includes:
I. Propagation of tree seedlings and tree planting to improve internal food supply chain and contribute to the country’s food security and climate change mitigation measures;
II. Developing and upgrading of infrastructure and facilities to accommodate our Servicemen and women within the NYS training institutions as another cost cutting measure and ensure high quality graduates.
III. Fostering youth innovation to stimulate start up and growth of micro, small and medium enterprises among youth for increased job opportunities;
IV. Identifying and nurturing youth talent to churn out sportsmen/women and creative artists for national and international sports and creative arts; and
V. Creating linkages for job placement and skills export for youth both locally and internationally.
CS Aisha Jumwa was received by NYS Council members led by the chairperson Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Njuki Mwaniki and NYS Director General, Ms Matilda Sakwa.
