But due to a tragic turn of events, members of the Miritini Apparels women group are now a worried lot and are not sure whether they will enjoy the money that they have been saving since January this year.
What was meant to ease the Christmas pressure has now become a subject of criminal proceedings before the Mombasa law court.
Ms Florence Okinyo was on Wednesday arraigned before the court and charged with theft of the money.
The charge sheet indicates that the woman, while acting as the treasurer of the women’s group, stole Sh163,060.
This happens in most of the groups. The group bank signatories can bank or withdraw money anytime. At some instances, the group officials do fake minutes and withdraw funds without members consent.ย
It can take upto an year for members to realise that their contributions or rather savings at the bank are empty.ย
Once the money has been withdrawn from the Bank without members consent, a legal action is taken. The members can report the matter to the office which registers groups ( Social Development Office commonly known as Social Services) or to the Police.ย
At Social Services, once they receive the complaint from members, they do summon the officials to establish what really happened. After hearing the other side of story they then arrange a meeting between the complaints and officials.ย
An agreement is reached on how the members funds will he repaid.ย
