In a statement released on July 4, 2023, the Azimio movement declared that the people of Kenya have reached a breaking point and are no longer willing to be taken for granted or treated as fools.
The movement, which represents a growing discontent with the current regime led by Ruto, announced their plans to take bold measures against the government’s unjust actions.
One of the major grievances cited by the Azimio movement is the imposition of taxes without the consent of the people.
The movement argues that the current state of taxation and its accompanying injustices have become unbearable.
Moreover, they criticize Ruto for removing subsidies on essential goods such as fuel, maize flour, electricity, and school fees, while simultaneously providing subsidies to the wealthy and financing the lavish lifestyles of his allies with the hard-earned money of ordinary citizens.
The Azimio movement characterizes Ruto as a heartless tyrant who disregards the welfare of the people.
In response to this perceived injustice, the movement has announced that a nationwide Kamukunji meeting will take place in Nairobi this Friday, July 7th.
The meeting aims to launch the “Third Liberation” and initiate signature collection campaigns as a means to express the public’s rejection of the Kenya Kwanza regime and its punitive tax policies.
The worsening economic situation in Kenya has further fueled the discontent among citizens. The prices of fuel, food, and transportation have skyrocketed, leading to a 30 percent increase in fares.
The Azimio movement emphasizes that they refuse to suffer in silence and bow down to dictators.
They believe in fighting for their rights and raising their voices against issues that directly affect them.
While the movement advocates for civil disobedience, pickets, protests, and tax boycotts, they make it clear that violence is not their path.
They emphasize their commitment to the law and the rule of law, stating that their sole weapon is their sovereign power to engage in peaceful protests and civil disobedience.
The Azimio movement firmly believes that they are on the right side and that their actions are justified within the boundaries of the law.
They assert that their protests, pickets, boycotts, and petitions are protected by the same law that establishes the government and its institutions. Refusing to be intimidated, they call upon fellow Kenyans to join them in the Kamukunji gathering in Nairobi and other locations across the country on Friday.
Azimio leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua among others were present.
