The Directorate of Criminal Investigations have confirmed that John Kamau, also known as Farouk, a prime suspect in the brutal murder of detective David Mayaka, has been fatally shot by police officers during a confrontation earlier today.
Detective Mayaka lost his life in a horrifying incident that shocked the nation just two weeks ago.
According to official reports, the confrontation occurred in the early hours of the morning when law enforcement cornered Kamau at an apartment in Njiru Sub-County.
Despite being ordered to surrender, Kamau opened fire on the officers, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The suspect sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kamau was armed with a CZ pistol, the very weapon that was used to end Detective Mayaka’s life.
Eyewitnesses say that as he emerged from his apartment, Kamau fired shots at the officers, injuring one on his left thigh. Swift and well-coordinated action by the officers resulted in the elimination of the suspect, marking a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
The operation was conducted by an elite team of detectives from the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau, backed by personnel from the Soweto and Njiru divisions.
During the operation, a backpack containing various mobile phones, suspected to have been obtained through violent means, was recovered. Additionally, the CZ pistol used in the crime was seized.
Preliminary findings from ballistic experts indicate that this firearm has been linked to a series of armed robberies across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties over the past year, including several MPESA outlets in densely populated areas.
Further investigations have unveiled a dark history behind the recovered firearm. It was reported stolen during a robbery incident that took place on November 17, 2021, in Ngong, Kajiado County.
During this incident, an aide to a former Cabinet Secretary was attacked by a gang armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and other crude weapons. The victim’s licensed firearm, the CZ pistol with serial number B626735, along with ammunition, was taken during the robbery.
This development follows the recent arrest of a key suspect, Alex Wanjiru, 23, who was apprehended last week in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. Wanjiru was identified as the rider of the motorbike used by the assailants on the night of Detective Mayaka’s murder.
The motorbike, a red Boxer with registration number KMGJ 350V, was confiscated during the arrest.
A nationwide manhunt is currently underway for the third suspect, Henry Njihia, who is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the collaborative effort needed to ensure justice is served.
Detective David Mayaka, based at DCI Makadara, tragically lost his life on August 8 while in the company of his wife. The couple was ambushed by a gang of three riding a motorbike, a shocking incident captured by nearby CCTV cameras.
In the aftermath of the operation, the injured officer who was shot during the confrontation is now in stable condition and recovering at a city hospital. The nation collectively wishes him a speedy and full recovery.
