
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of Kenya recognizes approved academic qualifications that have been attained by individuals from accredited institutions and colleges, and offered by government-approved examination bodies.
For those who earned their qualifications outside the country, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and the Commission for University Education (CUE) are responsible for providing an equation of the certificate in accordance with the law.

To enter the teaching profession in Kenya, TSC now recognizes the following minimum academic qualifications:
Approved Academic Qualifications for Primary School Teachers:
• Attainment of a mean grade of C (plain) or higher at KCSE level and possession of the Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certificate.
• For visually and hearing-impaired individuals, attainment of a C- (minus) at KCSE level is required.

Approved academic qualifications for Secondary School Teachers:
• Attainment of a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE level with a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
• Those who have not pursued education but have completed relevant Degree units and have undergone postgraduate studies for a diploma in Education must have scored a mean grade of C+ (plus) or higher at KCSE level.
• Attainment of a C plain at KCSE level with a diploma and Degree in Education is also eligible.
• For visually and hearing-impaired teachers intending to teach in Secondary School, attainment of a C (plain) at KCSE level and a C (plain) in the two teaching subjects is required.
Approved Academic Qualifications for Technical Institutions:
• Attainment of a mean Grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE with a diploma in relevant technical subjects. This means that one must have studied a diploma or degree in Technical Education.
• Relevant diploma in Technical Education with a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus), certificate, diploma, and higher diplomas in relevant technical subjects.
• Attainment of a C+ (plus) at KCSE and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education Technology.

It’s important to note that those intending to teach in post-primary institutions must attain a mean grade of C+ (plus) with a C+ in the two teaching subjects, except for visually and hearing-impaired individuals.
For teachers with a Special Needs Education (SNE) degree, attainment of a C+ (plus) at KCSE and a C+ in the two teaching subjects is required for those intending to teach in post-primary schools.
