In a recent survey conducted by UniRanks, nine local universities in Kenya have achieved commendable positions in the top 100 universities in Africa.
The rankings, released last week, are based on various performance indicators, including research output, knowledge transfer, international outlook, and teaching quality.
Additionally, accreditation by relevant higher education bodies in respective countries played a significant role in determining the standings.

Leading the pack among Kenyan institutions is the University of Nairobi, securing an impressive 6th position in the continental ranking.
Following closely are Kenyatta University (28), Strathmore University (42), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (49), and Mount Kenya University (51).
The United States International University Africa claimed the 65th position, while Egerton University, Moi University, and Methodist University shared positions 81 and 82 in the prestigious rankings.
Within the Kenyan borders, the University of Nairobi maintains its top spot, showcasing its consistent commitment to excellence.
Kenyatta University, Strathmore University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and Mount Kenya University (MKU) follow suit, dominating the first five slots in that order.
However, on the continental stage, South Africa stands out with 19 universities securing places in the top 100, and seven among the top ten.
The University of Cape Town from South Africa claimed the coveted top position, followed by other South African institutions like the University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, and Stellenbosch University.
Notably, Egypt’s University of Cairo secured the 5th position overall, one spot ahead of the University of Nairobi. Egypt boasts 15 universities among the top 100, with Nigeria and Algeria also making a significant impact, each contributing 10 universities to the prestigious list.
Globally, the University of Nairobi stands at position 924, showcasing its global relevance and influence. In comparison, South Africa’s University of Cape Town holds an impressive 236th position on the global stage.
Harvard University from the United States maintains its dominance by securing the top position globally for the sixth consecutive year.
The rankings highlight the strengths and areas of excellence of Kenyan universities in the African context.
The consistent performance of these institutions reflects their dedication to providing quality education, fostering research and knowledge transfer, and maintaining an international outlook.
