A three-year-old boy from Ikuruma village in Marani, Kisii County is admitted to a hospital in Kisii town after his eyes were gouged out by unknown people.
โBoth his eyes had been removed completely and there are some injuries in the lidsโฆso it looks like there was a sharp instrument like a knife that was used,โ Dr Daniel Kiage at the facility said.
His family has asked police to bring to book the perpetrators of the bizarre act that has left many in shock.
Police had initially arrested one of the boyโs relatives as a suspect in the investigations but later released him for lack of evidence connecting him to the crime.
UDA Nominated Senator Essy Okenyuri yesterday visited the victim at Kisii Eye Hospital and urged the police to arrest the culprits.ย
“This evening I visited 3 – year old Baby Sagini who was found dumped in Ikuruma at the Kisii Eye Hospital. Those culprits responsible for baby Sagini’s blindness should be found ASAP and action taken against them”, Okenyuri said.
A team of detectives has since been sent from Nairobi to boost local ones in the probe.
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin said they want to know the motive and those behind the bizarre incident.
Doctors have informed them that young Junior Sagini, the victim of the horrendous attack, will remain blind for the rest of his life.
The boy’s grandmother Ms Rael Mayieka said it all started when her grandson, Junior Sagini, had gone to fetch water on Thursday evening from a nearby spring.
He was in the company of other children but it is said that he threw his jerrycan into a nearby thicket and started running away
When the other children got home with their jerrycans full of water, they informed Sagini’s grandmother what had happened.
The granny went to the spring searching for her grandson, but he was nowhere to be seen.
“We tried to look for him but all our efforts proved futile. The following day, his elder brother who had gone to cut grass for the cows pounced on him in a maize plantation and he came home panting to inform us. We rushed to the scene and found the boy writhing in pain and his eyes gouged out,” Ms Mayieka said.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in a tweet has offered Ksh 400,000 for any police officer who will find and eliminate the culprits. Further Sonko has offered Ksh 200,000 to any Kenyan who will give any information leading to the arrest of the culprits.ย
